Yoav - Charmed And Strange (2008)

Yoav, Israel to a Romanian father nationality, migrated to South Africa as a child, before trying his luck as a troubadour in London, New York and Canada. It was while in New York that he hit upon the style he's now peddling: melancholic acoustic ballads tempered by guitar based percussion, with the help of loops and effect peddles. It has a voice capable of all things: he sounds just as good singing in falsetto as in a gravelly, crooner-ish voice. But his appeal is far more than that, his instrumentation is powerfully compelling. Again, this is someone whose band consists of his guitar and a pedal and yet, some of his songs manage to have atmospheric, mysterious power.
"Charmed and Strange" is gorgeously enjoyable, with the guitar stretching out to nearly violin sadness at some times, and reaching up to vivid heights of happiness and others. The beats that Yoav drums out of his guitar are extremely confident, listening to the album feels like diving into a lush sonic jungle with spots of sunshine and sadness, with colors and shadows. At the end the effect is complex, rejuvenating, and strange comparative from almost anything else you've heard before. Charmed and Strange, was made by Yoav and guitar and it's perfect to begin the year of 2008. The effect is strange, to be sure, but also appropriately charming.

Robots In Disguise - We're in the Music Biz (2008)

On first view, Robots in Disguise, Dee Plume and Sue Denim, are pictured on the sleeve of "We’re in the Music Biz" wearing the regulation tight shirts and skinny ties of new wave. Short, sharp and right to the point, this is Robots In Disguise way of living, back with their third album to create more electro punk mayhem. Smart, sharp insider's perspective on planet pop, welded to a jagged yet sugary sound which combines the best bits of Chicks on Speed, Bloc Party and Elastica And the bitchier they get, the more brilliant We're in the Music Biz becomes. So is We're In The Music Biz distinctive enough and entertaining for sure, just when you think it's all surface, shows surprising depth and a streetwise attitude. It's a joy!

Operator Please - Yes Yes Vindictive (2008)

In an era where the future of rock supposedly consists of kids growing their fringes and documenting their angst, Operator Please are a big, coloured explosion on the horizon. Australian pop rock band Operator Please compose perfect pop nuggets and rolling, swirling, indie anthems, Operator Please have taken giddy excitement to new levels, youthful enthusiasm carries the day here and if most of the songs are genially direct without digging deep then the band's lack of guile makes the pleasure easy to embrace.
In one dose, "Yes Yes Vindictive" tries to remember the good times Yeah Yeah Yeahs brought to us with their frenetic rock. It's lived, funny and enjoyable to hear and dance by the sound of the new kind of youth rock. There's enough to keep them in the game of growing up successfully in public.

The Do - A Mouthful (2008)

The Do have no afraid about wearing their musical influences on their sleeve. Take a first look to "A Mouthful" and you’ll get a taste of the flavour of Blonde and Cocorosie. But the overriding influence that runs through out The Do’s debut album is Iceland’s alternative pop princess Bjork. They share Bjork’s off-the-wall originality and have taken a leaf out of the Icelandic diva’s music book, smashing down barriers between genres to forge their own unique sound. Dan Levy, The Do’s talented multi-instrumentalist, and singer Olivia B Merilahtin originally hooked up two years ago to work together on the soundtrack to a feature film. Their creative partnership blossomed from there and the duo went on to write the soundtracks for two other movies, François Rotger’s The Passenger and Christophe Ali’s Camping sauvage. They have also created stage music for a number of contemporary dance troupes.
“A Mouthful” is a delightful genre fusion album that is full of so many different twists, turns and crunches you'll never know what you are going to get here in this set. Just music that has the need to be heared and learned...how all music should be.
